Sottozero is an authentic Italian family-run desert and pastry business focused on creating quality products made fresh every day. Based in LaSalle, Ontario, co-owners Giovanni Arcuri and Lisa Costante use only all-natural ingredients to create their authentic Italian desserts and pastries. Among their specialties are gelato, Italian pastry, cakes, cupcakes, and hot beverages including Italian Espresso and Cappuccino.
Giovanni, the “Gelato Maker,” comes from a family of pastry and gelato chefs back in Italy. He came to Canada in 2018 when he met Lisa. After sampling his gelato, it was love at first bite! Together, they created Sottozero Gelato. Combining Giovanni’s old-world recipes with Lisa’s new ideas, the developed Italian gelato with a Canadian twist.
Sottozero gelato is a dessert of Italian origin, handed down from generation to generation. It’s made with a 3.25% milk and low-fat sugar base compared to other styles of frozen desserts. Our gelato does not contain air, but more aroma than other types of desserts, giving it a density and richness that distinguish it from other gelato. Sottozero’s journey in flavour is a never-ending one. In their workshops, Giovanni and Lisa look for recipes from bygone days and experiment with new flavours and combinations.
Their unique gelato cake is the biggest hit of all. They may not be a traditional cake, but they are made from Sottozero gelatos and are 100% Italiano delights for any occasion.
Sottozero Catering became an instant hit from the moment it was conceived. The business provides dessert catering to almost any event small or large. Sottozero has catered events as large as 1,000 people and are capable of handling crowds of up to 1,500. Catering menus are customized to the event and the unique needs of the client. Options include a gelato cart, espresso and cappuccino station, cannoli cart, champagne cart, dessert tables, assorted pastry trays, gift boxes and much more. The carts are available on different sizes and configurations to fit any venue whether in a rented space, festival tent or private backyard event.
Giovanni and Lisa pour their love into their hand-crafted products, but there is always extra love to help the community. They were recently involved in the In Honour of the Ones We Love gala in February 2020. And since Covid-19, Sottozero has been involved in numerous gelato giveaways during the most difficult periods of business shutdowns.
Sottozero currently operates out of their private commercial kitchen in LaSalle, but there are plans to open a storefront location in the near future.
